James Nesbitt rumoured to be next Doctor Who
With David Tennant’s incarnation as Doctor Who set to come to an end with the conclusion of the next series, James Nesbitt has been linked with the role of the nation’s favourite time lord.
The Northern Irish actor, who came to national fame through his role in the drama Cold Feet, is currently working with one of the show’s writers, Steven Moffat, on the BBC prime-time show Jekyll.
With Moffat hotly tipped to succeed Russell T Davies as the show’s producer, Nesbitt is seen as the natural choice to take on the role of the Doctor in his 11th incarnation , with one source telling the Sun newspaper that the actor is a “shoe in” for the role.
Should things go as expected, he would be the first-ever Northern Irish Doctor, just as David Tennant is the only Scot to have ever played the show’s title character.
Currently, Kylie Minogue is with Tennant filming a Doctor Who Christmas special, though the pop star is merely making a guest appearance in the show.
Comedian Catherine Tate is due to be Tenant’s female companion during his final series in the role, replacing Freema Agyeman , who has joined the cast of Doctor Who spin-off Torchwood.
