Housemates braced for double eviction

One in three aren’t very good odds for Jonty, Kara-Louise or Tracey.

The housemates are were all nominated for this week’s special double eviction by the fellow Big Brother housemates and, for once, there are no clear favourites for the axe.

Raver-cum-cleaner Tracey will be looking to survive her fifth eviction night, while the other two have become increasingly unpopular with both their fellow contestants and viewers alike over the past few weeks.

To take the housemates’ minds off the imminent cull, the show’s producers asked them to take part in a “Rate Your Housemate” task yesterday.

Perhaps not surprisingly, Zara-Louise was nominated as the ‘Worst Hoisemate’ by everybody else and as the Nastiest Housemate by everyone but Ziggy, while Carole was seen by the former boy-band star as the ‘Most Spineless Housemate’.

This latest eviction comes as Channel 4 announced that it will not be screening another series of Celebrity Big Brother next year, bringing to an end rumors that Paris Hilton being lined up to star in the show.

Still Game

Still GameWhile Still Game originally started on BBC Scotland, it attracted such a following north of the border that it was moved to prime time BBC, for coverage around the UK.  This hilarious program centres around the delights of Glasgow and takes in a whole mix of the local community, who get involved in some crazy capers.  They laugh, they cry, they argue and then they all have a drink together - always sniping and trying to wind each other up.

The show itself really centres around Jack and Victor, a couple of pensioners who live together and are never far from each others side.  They know how to wind each other up, but they also know how to set mischievous tongues wagging like Isa over the road - your traditional nosy neighbour.  The show has been a remarkable success when you consider that is has been going since 2002, and has only really had 6 main characters, and cast members.

In tonights show Tam and Frances enjoy their new arrival, and are invited to a number of chat show, including Lorraine Kelly, as the whole country seems to be interested in the fact that they are the oldest new parents in the UK.  Sponsorships, TV and magazine deals all flow and put pressure on Jack and Victor who are feeling a little left out, and left holding the bay.

While the sly old pensioners have a trick or two up their sleeves to bring Tam and Frances back down to earth with a dump, it does not all go to plan and Jack has an accident.  There are a few tear jerking scenes, but will it all come right in the end?

Due to the strong local accents in the show, the BBC have added sub-titles to some episodes, in order that viewers can fully understand and enjoy the show.  While some not familiar with the local Glasgow accents may find it a little difficult to begin with, it is well worth persevering as the show has some hilarious storylines.

BB’s Sam fed up of the teasing

Sam, one half of Big Brother’s ditzy twins, has had enough of her fellow housemates teasing her about her relationship with Liam.

The 19-year-old and the tree surgeon have been almost constantly flirting with each other for some time now, leading both viewers and contestants to believe that something a little more has been going on.

Most recently, she hid sobbing in the diary room after Carole had been making a series of jokes about the pair, claiming that she was worried about what her boyfriend would be thinking as he watched them on the TV.

“If I even fancied Liam do you think I’d even talk about Rich, do you think I’d say that I have a boyfriend or even come in here with a boyfriend,” she said to her twin Amanda.

While the girly chat cooled her down a bit, it looks likely that she will remain touchy about the subject of her and Liam for the rest her time in the house.

“If Carole says anything about it one more time I’m gonna go mad, really mad, I’m gonna scream,” she said.

Match Of The Day Live

EnglandThe German football team are sure to receive a warm welcome at the new Wembley, as the old foes go head to head in only the second match since the opening of the revamped stadium.  After a last minute equaliser robbed Steve McClaren’s team of what would have been a well received win against the mighty Brazil, the home crowd will be looking to get one over the “old enemy”.

Tonight’s live match is hosted by Gary Lineker, with Alan Shearer, Ian Wright and Alan Hansen in support, offering their views and advice on what promises to be an interesting affair.  The England manager has been under some pressure of late after a disappointing last couple of games has seen them drop vital points in the pursuit of qualification for Euro 2008.  While tonight’s game is only a friendly with little at stake, it offers a useful opportunity to rebuild the team spirit and give the home fans something to shout about.

The England team will be without the services of Rooney and Gerard who are both injured, although there are high hopes that Gerard will be back for next months vital double header of qualifiers.  Else where it looks as though McClaren will use tonight’s game to “blood” a few of the younger players with Shaun Wright-Phillips hoping to use his improved club form so far this season to push his England claims.

The German team also have their fair share of injuries although there is no doubt that those selected will be up for the challenge.  While England fans will be hoping for a repeat of their famous 5 - 1 victory away to Germany in 2001, it seems unlikely that they will be “rolled over” again. While both teams are not at full strength, expect fireworks from the first whistle.

Corrie’s Christmas present to us all: Jim McDonald

Angry Ulsterman Jim McDonald is to return to Coronation Street as part of a dramatic Christmas storyline, it has been revealed.

The mustachioed maniac left the Weatherfield seven years ago after being jailed for murdering drug dealer Jez Quigley.

However, despite killing a man and then going on the run from prison officers whilst on parole when he discovered that Liz was having an affair with a Blackpool landlord, Jim is due to be set free any day.

Given that his former wife has hardly been celibate since then, it looks likely that Jim’s Rover’s Return will pass by quietly.

“I don’t know yet what the storyline will be but it’ll be a big,” actor Charles Lawson, who plays big Jim told the Manchester Evening News.

“I don’t think they would bring Jim back for a pint in the Rovers.”

Charles, who is currently warming up for his comeback by playing the role of the evil Abanazar in Stockport Plaza’s production of Aladdin, also added that he has signed a contract for three months, though would stay on if asked.

Cowell to make Pop Idol movie

Talent-show guru Simon Cowell has revealed that he plans to make a movie of his American Idol show.

Appropriately enough the lead roles for the film will be cast by Cowell through a series of open auditions to be held across the US.

While a script has yet to be finalised, TV’s Mr Mean has said that it will be “very, very realistic” and be about more than just singing and dancing.

“It is called Starstruck. We’re writing the script as we talk,” he told the US news show Extra.

“It is about  ten  contestants who enter a gigantic singing contest. It’s like Rocky. It’s about good versus evil, and it will be very, very realistic.

“So if you get through the auditions, and you get a part in this movie, it’s a huge, huge deal.”

Right now, Cowell is enjoying record success with the new series of the X Factor in the UK.

Around 10.7 million people tuned in for the first show, almost 50 per cent of the national viewing audience for a Saturday night and 500,000 viewers higher than its previous best in 2006 , despite charges that certain scenes surrounding the return of judge Louis Walsh were faked.

Shark Quest

SharkTo many of us the shark is a creature that you would avoid at all costs, but to photographers Rob Torelli and Mark Priest they are objects of curiosity which have been involved in much of their professional lives.  “Shark Quest” sees the two of them take us on a magical tour of the world’s oceans, revealing the secret techniques they use to bring you those unbelievable open mouthed shark shots, or a pack of them moving in on their prey.

While the shark has always been a creature to be feared, they came into the main stream with films like Jaws, with great white sharks venturing in land, instilling terror into the thousands of holiday makers on the US coast.  That fascination with sharks has continued for decades after the original Jaws film, and we often see reports in the press with regard to shark sightings off the UK coast line - something thought impossible 20 years ago.

Even though the likes of the great white shark receive much of the headlines, there are a great variety of sharks which come in all shapes and sizes, and very often of no threat to humans.  They tend to live in the warmer waters, which is why sightings along the UK coastline have been few and far between.  Unfortunately like so many of natures beautiful creatures, the shark has become a focal point for many hunters, with shark’s teeth seen as prized possessions by many.

This weird and wonderful glimpse into the beautiful world of the deep offers an insight into how those pictures we often take for granted are actually achieved.  While programs such as “Shark Quest” are very educational, they also bring the plight of the species to the public eye, and hopefully assist in prolonging the existence of these often misunderstood creatures.

Porridge, With The Late Great Ronnie Barker

PorridgeWhile there are very few comics who actual cross the divide to acting, there are even fewer who actually go on to have two highly successful comedy shows, which even years after they ended are very much still in demand.  Ronnie Barker is one such actor and his role in Porridge, as Norman Stanley Fletcher the mouthy inmate of Slade Prison has gone down in comic folklore.  He also had one of the most able casts to support him, including the late Richard Beckinsale and the excellent David Jason.

Each episode was a battle of wits between the inmates and the prison officers, of whom Mr MacKay was the one who never game them an inch.  Richard Beckinsale played “Godber” a young lad from Birmingham who was doing his first “stretch”.   Originally hoping that his senior status in the hierarchy might blag him a single cell, “Fletch” was dismayed to be paired up with “Godber”, a young man whom he grudgingly took under his wing, but always at a cost!

While Ronnie Barker was as successful as any comedian had ever been with his “Two Ronnies” double act with Ronnie Corbett, Porridge brought together Barker and David Jason for the first time.  This partnership lasted for many years, and saw them reunited as the stars of the show in “Open All hours” (again a hugely successful comedy show which is still repeated to this day, more than 20 years after the last episode was recorded).  Jason later paid a great tribute to his “special friend” Ronnie Barker on his sad death, and put his success down to those early days with the great man.

Tonight’s episode see a “thief” in the ranks, and while the prison is actually full of convicted criminals, honour amongst thieves comes into play.  In some hilarious scenes each inmate is questioned, probed and prodded until the culprit comes forward - a surprise to everyone!

Gerry to pursue post-BB writing career

Fresh out of the Big Brother house, Gerry has revealed his plans to release his own dating guide.

While most evictees are content with simply cashing in on their new-found “celebrity” status by attending B-list parties, the 31-year-old has claimed that he intends to follow his dream and become a successful author.

Speaking to Channel 4, he said: “Hopefully I will publish my book on dating. It’s only a small paperback, but it could be a success because I spent  ten  years talking to women to get all the ideas.

“I really, really hope that I can get a stable career by popular writing for a wide audience, because I don’t want to be a celebrity out of Big Brother, but I would love a chance to speak about what I spent all those years at university learning.”

The remaining contestants are in for a shock this week as Big Brother’s producers revealed that they will be staging a double eviction next Friday, with the twins Amanda and Sam counting as one.

Until then, they are being kept busy learning the rules of etiquette at the Big Brother Finishing Academy, with a luxury shopping budget on offer should  they all learn to behave like true ladies and gentlemen.

Muriel’s Wedding

Muriel’s weddingMuriel Heslop is a small town Australian girl, from Porpoise Spit, that just wants to get married. She’s the daughter of an over-bearing local politician, but she’s fat, frumpy, shy and out of work. She is the butt of her cynical ‘friends’ ire and her life is bad. The only thing that makes her happy is her love of ABBA, if only life could be as good as an ABBA song.

Muriel’s Wedding is a sparkly Australian comedy plotting her transition from frump to fame. Toni Colette plays the title role with wit and affection. Support comes from the great and good of the Australian film industry.

Muriel steals money from her father to go on a holiday with the friends that despise her, where they accuse her of stalking her. Bumping into an old school-friend, Rhonda, who is glamorous and popular, she has a soul-mate. Rhonda already has a hatred of Muriel’s tormentors and her confidence brings Muriel along.

The most telling scene in the film is when Muriel and Rhonda are miming to “Waterloo” as Agnetha and Annifrid from ABBA. Muriel begins as a stilted and nervous Agnetha, in white jump suit and blonde wig, looking completely out of place next to Rhonda’s confident Frida. As a fight ensues between her ex-friends over the infidelity of one with another’s now husband, Muriel brightens up and shines, putting on a sassy and sexy show. They win the talent contest as the other girls are finishing their scrap.

When Muriel goes back to Porpoise Spit the theft becomes apparent and she retreats to Sydney and Rhonda. Rhonda is wild and helps Muriel open up, as she changes her name to ‘Mariel’. However, disaster strikes on two fronts as Rhonda suffers from a tumour that stops her from walking and Muriel’s father leaves her mother to be with the local beauty consultant. When Rhonda questions Muriel’s reasons for sticking around and looking after her, she explains how she no longer listens to ABBA songs because:

“My life’s as good as an ABBA song, it’s as good as ‘Dancing Queen’”

Muriel gets an opportunity to help a South African swimmer, David, get Australian citizenship by marrying him. As all that she has ever wanted was a wedding she jumps at the chance, despite the reservations of her athletic beau. Mariel has her old ‘friends’ as bridesmaids and thoroughly enjoys her day but falls out with Rhonda who accuses her of deserting her as she goes back to Porpoise Spit. However, the death of her mother brings her closer to David but she recognises that it is not real and ends the relationship as he becomes genuinely fond of her.

Muriel (again) returns to Porpoise Spit as an elegant and urbane city girl, but only to patch up with her father and take Rhonda back to Sydney. This a genuinely delightful movie picking up on the power of true friendships and still Toni Colette’s finest performance.
