Eggheads is a daily quiz show aired on BBC2 in the early evening. It is hosted by Dermot Murnaghan and has two teams of 5 pitting their wits against each other. The resident team is known as “Eggheads” and consists of 5 winners of game shows as follows:
• Kevin Ashman – winner of “World Quiz”;
• CJ De Mooi – winner of “The Weakest Link”;
• Judith Keppel – winner of “Who wants to be a millionaire?”;
• Daphne Fowler – winner of “Fifteen to one”;
• Chris Hughes – winner of “Brain of Britain”.
A team of 5 contestants challenge the Eggheads for a daily £1000 prize money – if no-one beats the Eggheads, then this amount is accumulated so that the prize total today was £57,000. The contenders were known as “The Pineapples” – 5 Oxford University graduates who play in pub quizzes at the Pineapple in Kentish Town.
The quiz started with “Head to Heads” where one of the challengers plays against one of the Eggheads (with no team conferring). The trick is to choose a challenger with a strong knowledge of a topic area against an Egghead with a low knowledge. The “Head to Head” topics were:
• Arts and books
Three questions are asked to the challenger and Egghead in turn and they have to choose from 3 multiple choice answers. If the scores are even after three questions each, then there is a sudden death situation where they are asked questions directly with no choice of answers. The loser of the round can not participate in the final round and so the team loses one “brain”. Those who are left compete in the final where the questions are on General Knowledge.
It was a close run thing with the Pineapples putting up a good performance. However, the Eggheads won again and the prize fund rolls over to £58,000.
