Britney Spears wouldn’t get past the first round of X-Factor auditions based on her latest performance, the talent show’s chief Simon Cowell has said.
His harsh comments come after Britney attempted to resurrect her pop career with a performance at the recent MTV music awards, though she was universally criticised for miming and looking generally worse for wear.
“If I had been looking after Britney I’d have taken one look at her in rehearsals and I wouldn’t have allowed her on stage,” Simon told the Sun newspaper.
“The song wasn’t right, the image wasn’t right and she just wasn’t rehearsed,” he said.
“If she had turned up and given that performance at ‘The X Factor’ auditions then I wouldn’t have put her through to the next round.”
One singer who won’t be returning to the show is last year’s star Ben Mills.
The gravel-voiced 27-year old, who is currently recording his second album in Dublin, believes the focus should be on the current contestants rather than on previous singers.
