Big Brother Begins
Welcome to OnTheBox’s Big Brother diary. Each day we’ll bring you all the gossip on what’s been happening in the house.
The new series of Big Brother kicked off last night with the most bizarre collection of housemates ever.
Couple Mario Marconi, 42, and Lisa Appleton, 40, both from Warrington were the first people to enter the house, and were joined by suit-loving politics student Luke Marsden, 20, from Wigan, 19-year-old ‘Popstars: The Rivals’ reject Stephanie McMichael, from Liverpool and self-styled playboy Rex Newmark, 24, from London.
Also under 24-hour surveillance will be cookie-mad Thai massage therapist Kathreya Kasisopa, 30, blind transvestite comic Mikey Hughes, 33, and 24-year-old Miss Wales runner-up Rachel Rice.
Somalian Mohamed Mohamed, 23, screamer Rebecca Shiner, 21, from Coventry, fame-hungry P.E. teacher Dale Howard, 21, dance teacher Dennis McHugh, 23, part-time model and mother Jennifer Clark, 22, and albino US deportee Darnell Swallow, 26, are also among the contestants gunning for the £100,000 prize.
The 16 housemates were rounded off by Islam convert and mother Alexandra De-Gale, 23, and 21-year-old church-goer Sylvia Barrie.
‘Big Brother’ boss Phil Edgar Jones said: “The characters this year are like you have never seen before. These are people you would never meet in real life.
“We combed Britain for the most amazing people you could encounter. It’s going to be fireworks.”
Big Brother is set for its first ‘wedding’ as part of this week’s secret task.
Couple Mario Marconi and Lisa Appleton were given the shock mission during last night’s (06.06.08) live launch when they were told they and fellow contestants Stephanie McMichael and Luke Marsden have to keep the relationship secret.
And to add to the quartet’s difficulties, Mario – who claims to have slept with more than 200 women – and 19-year-old Stephanie have to pretend they are an item.
If they fail to keep up the charade, all four housemates will be up for eviction. If they succeed, every other housemate will face the public vote.
But presenter Davina McCall added another shock twist by telling viewers Mario and Stephanie are to be “married” on Sunday live on air – an event the two housemates will be told is genuine.
The foursome, the first people to enter the house, were called to the diary room shortly after entering when Big Brother gave them their task.
Big Brother cheekily concluded its announcement by telling ‘Popstars: The Rivals’ reject Stephanie and bodybuilder Mario, “You make a lovely couple”.
