Dev Patel cast in new Shyamalan film ‘The Last Airbender’
Watching each new M. Night Shyamalan film has become an increasingly torturous experience; an infuriating feeling we believe is akin to forcing a dyslexic to write Shyamalan’s name out a hundred times. In the dark. Using a coathanger on a blackboard. With their teeth.
2008’s ‘The Happening’ was so inexcusably poor that a prolonged, Edward Scissorhands-delivered, cat-sick enema would be more preferable, and so it was as much a surprise to hear he had acquired the rights to direct another film, let alone a relatively big-name license as Nickelodeon’s Avatar: The Last Airbender.
The world-wide ‘toon smash follows a 12 year old ‘Air Bender’, the last of the Air race who spends a 100 years frozen in a glacier before becoming the latest Avatar, the spirit of the planet in human form who must overthrow the vicious Fire Nation.
The cast has been revealed and thankfully there’s not a Wahlberg, Deschanel or Gibson in sight. The biggest announcement is Dev Patel as Zuko, the villain/antihero/hero (depending on when in show’s history the movie is set) member of the Fire Nation. Hot on the heels of the publicity and buzz surrounding his Slumdog Millionaire award nominations, we just hope Shyamalan’s debilitatingly gradual slide from ‘hot’ to ‘mediocrity’ to ‘oh jesus why won’t the pain end’ quality isn’t contagious.
The film begins shooting in March, with a July 2, 2010 release date set.
