Asteroids: The Movie!
It was only a matter of time.
Hollywood’s onslaught of bygone kiddie trends; comic books, TV shows, and toys – I mean action figures – has reached the realm of the video game.We hear today that there has been a bidding war for the rights to make a movie based on the classic arcade game Asteroids.
For those born after Thatcher, Asteroids is the one where you’re this little triangle in the middle of the screen blowing bits of rock into smaller bits. There were two controls: rotate and shoot. Easy to learn, difficult to master.
As thrilling as the game once was to play, with sweaty thumbs and copious cans of Tab, we’re not convinced it will translate to the silver screen.
This hasn’t stopped movie studio Warners buying all the rights for Midway Games who brought us 2D delights Pacman and Mortal Kombat. We can only hope this won’t mean another Street Fighter fiasco.
