Viggo Mortensen has confirmed that he is planning to retire from filmmaking.

Best known for his role as Aragorn in the Lord of the Rings trilogy, the 50-year-old actor has previously confessed to feeling “shattered” after promoting each release.

He plans to focus on his painting, poetry and photography, and will retire after the release of upcoming movie The Road.

“I have no plans to do another movie,” he told Men’s Journal. “I don’t know what’s going to happen. I’m open to seeing how I feel in a while, but right now I’m not saying yes to anything.”

He added: “My agent is like, ‘Well, if you don’t do anything, people will forget about you’. I just feel like I’ve taken on too much for a while”.

The Road, an adaptation of Cormac McCarthy’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, is scheduled to open in US cinemas on October 16 and in the UK on January 8.
