Patrick Swayze Dies After Battle With Cancer
The eighties icon went public with his illness in spring last year and bravely continued working as he underwent treatment. While making The Beast in recent months he refused painkillers for fear that they would take the edge off his performance.
Swayze will be best remembered for Dirty Dancing, made in 1987, where he played smooth dance instructor Johnny Castle. His co-star Jennifer Grey paid tribute to him last night:
“Patrick was a rare and beautiful combination of raw masculinity and amazing grace. Gorgeous and strong, he was a real cowboy with a tender heart.
“He was fearless and insisted on always doing his own stunts, so it was not surprising to me that the war he waged on his cancer was so courageous and dignified.”
He enhanced his stardom in 1990 when he starred alongside Demi Moore and Whoopi Goldberg in Ghost, a film which took $505m at box offices globally.
Despite early success, he battled alcoholism on a number of occasions after his father’s death and his sister’s suicide, but recovered and went on to make a number of appearances on screen and stage.
Actor Rob Lowe described his passing as “like losing a brother”.
