Roman Polanksi Finally Arrested
Well the long arm of the law has finally caught up with Oscar winning director, Roman Polanski.
While attending a film festival in Zurich, at which he was to receive a lifetime achievement award, he was arrested on request from US authorities, satisfying a 31 year old warrant for his arrest.
Ironically, he could spend the rest of his life in prison, funny old world ain’t it?
Back in ’77 Polanski was held and questioned after being charged with drugging and having sex with a 13 year old girl. He served 42 days in a prison with the understanding that that would be the end of the matter, but when Polanski heard that the judge had changed his mind and wanted a harsher sentence, he fled to the UK in ’78.
Polanski has never returned to the States since and has been living in France but could not be extradited because he is a French citizen. However, while he was in Zurich, the US officials, who have never taken their eye off Polanski, ordered his arrest.
They struck whilst The Pianist director was there because of their relaxed extradition laws. Though no decision has been made yet as to whether or not he’ll be sent to the US for trial, it looks like Polanski won’t be able to escape a second time.
