Roman Polanski was arrested in Zurich at a film festival where he was supposed to accept a lifetime achievement award as we reported yesterday, but there are some that think that reopening the case won’t do much good.

The woman at the centre of the case, Samantha Geimler was only 13 when Polanski sexually assaulted her but she has very publicly said that she would rather the trial didn’t happen. But this has only encouraged controversy.

Anne Applebaum of the Washington Post has said that, ‘He did commit a crime, but he has paid for the crime in many, many ways: In notoriety, in lawyers’ fees, in professional stigma.’ This was in her article titled ‘The Outrageous Arrest of Roman Polanski’. Ha.

Famed movie producer Harvey Weinstein has said, “We’re calling on every film-maker we can to help fix this terrible situation.”

Joan Z. Shore of the Huffington Post spoke against the Swiss in her article ‘Polanski’s Arrest: Shame on the Swiss’. She said, “Arresting Roman Polanski the other day in Zurich, where he was to receive an honorary award at a film festival, was disgraceful and unjustifiable.”

We’re gonna lay down the law right now. Roman Polanski committed a crime. Criminals go to jail. We’re fairly sure that’s how the legal system is supposed to work. Please let us know if we’re wrong.

We’re also pretty sure that if all those responsible for the credit crunch ran off and hid for 30 years, they’d be in a cell faster than you can say RBS.
