Another Musical: Rock Of Ages
Movie musicals are all the rage these days. There’s the corseted celebs in Chicago and the comical personalities in The Producers. Now it’s Rock of Ages.
Leading the band is none other than Adam Shankman, the guy who brought Broadway musical Hairspray to the silver screen. New Line Cinema has deemed the musical marvel both director and choreographer of the film adaptation, says Variety. Meanwhile, the script has been written by the musical’s creator, Chris D’Arienzo. And producers include Carl Levin, Matt Weaver, Scott Prisand, Tobey Maguire and Jennifer Gibgot, with executive producers Janet Billig and Hillary Weaver.
Rock of Ages focuses on a young hopeful rocker and a small town girl who meet at the legendary Los Angeles’ Sunset Strip club in 1987 and fall in love. In expressing their struggle to stay together, they belt out ’80s rock anthems in head-banging fashion. The score spans Styx, REO Speedwagon, Foreigner, Pat Benatar, Whitesnake, and Journey. Don’t Stop Believin’ is what it is all about.
No casting has been announced, but the film will begin production by next summer. Rock of Ages is scheduled to be released by Warner Bros. in 2011.
