Angsty teen dramas are the way to go this year. Well, that, and sci-fi psychological thrillers. Andrea Arnold’s Fish Tank and Duncan Jones’ Moon are going head-to-head in this year’s British Independent Film Awards.

Arnold’s film, depicting the turbulent life of a 15-year-old, has garnered eight nominations in total. Besides a nod for Best British Independent Film, the writer/director is nominated for Best Director and Best Screenplay, while the film’s lead Katie Jarvis, an unknown, is nominated in this year’s Best Actress and Most Promising Newcomer categories.

And on this side of the ring, we have Jones’ Moon, which falls just behind Fish Tank with seven nominations. Best Director for helmer Jones, Best Film, and the Douglas Hickox Award for a debut filmmaker are among the bunch.

The nods will be dished out by James Nesbitt on Sunday, December 6 at The Brewery in London.
