damonMatt Damon is jumping on the bandwagon of True Grit‘s Oscar-dominated cast.

According to a report on Variety, Damon, an Academy Award-winner, and Academy Award-nominee Josh Brolin are in talks to join yet another Academy Award-nominee, Jeff Bridges, in Joel and Ethan Coen’s update of the 1969 John Wayne western, True Grit.

If cast, it will be a first between the Coens and Damon. The newcomer is negotiating for the part of US Marshal Rooster Cogburn’s lawman cohort.

Cogburn (John Wayne in the original) is set for Jeff Bridges, who worked with the Coens on the cult hit The Big Lebowski. And Brolin, who will play the murderous thug, collaborated with the brothers on their Oscar-winning No Country for Old Men.

Paramount Pictures, the film’s distributor, aims to start production in March for a late fall 2010 release.
