eddieAs his character was usually pretty useless at Quidditch, it seems quite fitting that Harry Potter star Rupert Grint is being lined up to play Eddie ‘The Eagle’ Edwards in a comedy biopic about the skiing legend.

The actor who many people will recognise at Hogwarts student Ron Weasley, will replace Steve Coogan in the production which is due to start filming next month.

Edwards was earning a living as a plasterer in Cheltenham when he represented Britain in the ski-jumping competition at the 1988 Winter Olympics. He finished last in both the 70m and 90m events, but was embraced by the nation as a plucky underdog.

Promisingly, the film will be overseen by the Dublin-born TV director Declan Lowney, who was best known for his work on Father Ted, Cold Feet and Little Britain.

Edwards himself may not be impressed by the casting – he has always maintained that his preferred choice for the role was Brad Pitt.
