netflixNetflix, the US movie rental company are planning to expand their online operation to the UK in the latter part of 2010 according to Reuters.

But unlike their current US service, Netflix will only offer a streaming service, not physical distribution.

“We are focused on entering one country and seeing how we do,” said Netflix CEO Reed Hastings, “Because we are launching in the second half of the year, I don’t think we could do a second country this year.”

Regarding the failure to launch a physical distribution network in 2004, Hastings said, “The big difference is we were entering with DVDs only [then]. It’s streaming only [now]. That’s a big difference – no warehouses, no integration with the Royal Mail.”

Physical rentals of the kind that Netflix provides in the States is pretty much wrapped up with Lovefilm, so they’re wise to keep to the online market
