BradpittBrad Pitt and Ryan Reynolds are said to be competing for the role of Marshall Matt Dillon (not that Matt Dillon) in an adaption of the classic Western TV series Gunsmoke.

It was one of the longest running series of all time (it’s current tied with Law & Order which is about to break its record) and regarded as one of the best, so whoever gets the role will have big shoes to fill.

The LA Times reports that CBS is on the hunt for someone to play the lead although no one has been formally approached yet. Apparently Brad and Reynolds are near the top of the list, being actors who can both combine acting with a sprinkle of action. Pitt already has some experience with the genre as he played the outlaw Jesse James in The Assassination Of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford in 2007.

The script’s current draft is by Gregory Poirier, one of the writers on National Treasure, so don’t expect an historically accurate period piece.
