chartier300It’s easy to get a bit carried away when your up for an award – but Nicholas Chartier seems to have paid a high price for his exuberance.

The producer of The Hurt Locker, was banned from attending the coveted Oscars ceremony this Sunday after sending emails to academy members urging them to vote for his film and not James Cameron’s Avatar.

“Tell actors, directors, crew members, art directors, special effects people, if everyone tells one or two of their friends, we will win and not a $500M film,” he wrote.

Many in the industry have said that this type of thing happens with relative frequency and that Chartier can consider himself hard-done-by. Yet some of his colleagues have moved to distance themselves from him claiming that he has always been considered a ‘reactionary’ figure within the industry.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has now barred Chartier from attending this Sunday’s ceremony because the promotion of his film is disparaging to Avatar.

However, his nomination eligibility has not been rescinded and he will receive an Oscar should Kathryn Bigelow’s The Hurt Locker win the ‘Best Picture’ honour.
