jeff bridges300x210Jeff Bridges may have won an Oscar for his portrayal of a hard living country singer in Crazy Heart but it turns out he had a lot of experience to go on.

In an interview with The Sun, Bridges revealed that in his youth he was pretty wild and how that not only influenced Crazy Heart, but the role that made him famous, The Dude in The Big Lebowski.

“When I was younger there were stories about me doing drugs and how I was ‘torturing’ my family. Actually, it was pretty accurate. In my 20s I was experimenting with drugs like pot, LSD and coke. That part of my life was in the past by then, but I could relate to The Dude.”

As well as having an effect on his family, Bridges’ drug use had a pretty big effect on his dad’s car.

“I did it before I had a driver’s licence. Dad had a ’63 Lincoln, a beautiful car, that he let me use near the garage. The car was going backwards and I thought, ‘I can’t be pushing the gas hard enough for it to go forward’. So I pushed harder and the car went through a brick wall.”

He’s calmed down a lot since those days and that’s mostly down to his wife and children. Unlike most Hollywood relationships, Bridges has been happily married since 1977 and are still going strong. “I’m so in love with her. The relationship just keeps getting better and more intimate and sexier and all that stuff. My wife supports me and it makes me love her more.”
