Joss Whedon 300It’s been floating around as a rumour for quite sometime now but Deadline reports that Marvel are in final talks with Joss Whedon to helm The Avengers movie.

In an all-star line up which will bring together some of Marvel’s best-loved characters including Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), Captain America (Chris Evans), Thor (Chris Hemsworth) and Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) to fight a significant threat (we’re assuming it’s not a spandex strike).

In all likelihood, it’ll be The Hulk after he went AWOL at the end of the last movie but whether Edward Norton has agreed to sign up has yet to be revealed.

Whedon’s more famous for his TV series – Buffy, Firefly, Dollhouse and Whedon’s only got one movie to his name (the excellent Serenity) but his TV work has been consistently solid.

And while some may complain that all his characters are the same (wisecracking one-line tossing smartarses), that would probably work with most of Marvel’s ouevre. The Dark Knight this ain’t.

It won’t be for a while, it’s in the diary to start filming in 2012 and Chris Evans still needs to get to grips with the first Captain America movie. What do you think Whedon fans/haters? A good choice or a grave mistake?
