tonygilroy210x300Given the success of the Bourne franchise, one would think that locking down a creative team shouldn’t take so damn long, but apparently it was a real struggle just to name the writer of the fourth instalment of the series.

But we’re not sure why. Tony Gilroy has been named as the scribe of the next movie which really shouldn’t have come as a surprise because he wrote the last three films.

At least we now know the name of the upcoming movie – The Bourne Legacy, based on a book by Eric Van Lustbader, the man who jumped into Robert Ludlum’s literary grave after his death in order to continue the franchise.

The question that’s hanging over this production is can Matt Damon and director Paul Greengrass be tempted back to the material by Gilroy’s continued involvement? By the sounds of it, Damon has moved on from Bourne but there’s always room for a Rocky Balboa like return. And Greengrass is currently contemplating a Treasure Island remake so will Gilroy be in line to sit in the director’s chair himself this time around? He did manage to do a decent job of Duplicity and Michael Clayton so maybe Greengrass will hand him the baton.
