alexgarlandA few weeks ago we reported on the forthcoming remake of the sci-fi classic Logan’s Run and now it’s got a pretty decent writer attached.

Alex Garland may not be a name you know but you’ll definitely know his work – Sunshine, 28 Days Later and the upcoming Never Let Me Go as well as the original novel that The Beach was based on. If the project does end up with Garland weilding the pen, we’re guessing that it’s going to be a much darker affair than the iconic 1976 version.

Producers Joel Silver and Akiva Goldsman are trying to keep the material closer to the 1967 novel by William F. Nolan and George Clayton Johnson. The action takes place in a dystopian setting where as soon as people reach 21, they are euthanised. Those trying to escape their fates, Runners, are hunted down by Sandmen like the eponymous Logan whose birthday is fast approaching.

Garland’s slow paced and well-crafted style suits dystopian stories perfectly as we’ve seen with his collaborations with Danny Boyle – we just have to hope that he doesn’t get too much studio interferance.
