Casting Of Jolie As Cleopatra Sparks ‘Race Row’
Producers of the forthcoming historical epic, Cleopatra are at the centre of what has been described as a ‘race row’ by many media outlets this evening after they received heated criticism for casting Angelina Jolie as the Egyptian queen.
Apparently a ‘race row’ is triggered when one group of people is accused of racism by someone (in this case Essence.com writer Shirea L. Carroll).
“Honestly, I don’t care how full Angelina Jolie’s lips are, how many African children she adopts, or how bronzed her skin will become for the film, I firmly believe this role should have gone to a Black woman,” wrote he journalist.
Carroll suggested that Vanessa Williams, Halle Berry and Thandie Newton would have been better choices for the part.
