Marty210Martin Scorsese has finally started filming his adapation of Brian Selznick’s acclaimed, wonderfully illustrated adventure book The Invention Of Hugo Cabret and boy oh boy is this an ensemble cast.

Hugo Cabret
will star Ben Kingsley, Sacha Baron Cohen, Asa Butterfield and Chloe Moretz. As if that wasn’t enough to get your mouth watering, the supporting cast will be made up of Christopher Lee, Jude Law, Ray “Apples an’ Pears” Winstone, Helen McRory, Frances De La Tour and miserable muggle Uncle Vincent himself Richard Griffiths.

Set in 1930s Paris, it tells the story of orphaned Hugo who lives in the roof of the Gare Montparnasse and looks after the clock whilst attempting to repair a wind up automaton left to him by his father.

As well as being a great adventure and mystery, it’s also rather touching, not to mentioned woven into the history of cinema itself with pioneering master filmmaker George Melies (Le Voyage dans la Lune) playing a major role. With that cast and those details, this one looks like it could be an absolute cracker, especially given Scorsese’s passion for cinema.

Marty’s also surrounded himself with familiar faces for this project – John Logan (The Aviator) is writing the script and Dante Ferretti (Shutter Island) is handling the production design. Shooting has started in London but much of it will be filmed in Paris. Expect a late 2011 release.
