lewis300As castings go, we have to admit that making Daniel Day-Lewis the sinister arch-nemesis to Robert Downey Jr’s exuberant Sherlock Holmes is a pretty good one.

So we were pretty pleased to hear that the multi-award winning actor has ended months of speculation and signed up to play Professor Moriarty in the upcoming sequel to Guy Ritchies’ detective actioner.

The film – which at this stage is known only as Sherlock Holmes 2 – will begin filming in October and will see Day-Lewis playing the intellectual crime boss after beating off competition from Javier Bardem, Gary Oldman and Sean Penn. Brad Pitt’s name was also widely circulated but it is belived the star’s wage demands were too large for the movie’s budget.

Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law have already signed up for the film and Law has been telling Contact Music of his excitement at playing Dr. Watson again.

“I had so much fun making ‘Sherlock Holmes’ that the question of how much money it would make just wasn’t one of my priorities. Of course I was really pleased it was such a success but mostly because that will give me the opportunity to work with Robert and Guy again.”
