Johansson Versus Lively For Gravity
Gossip Girl’s Blake Lively and Iron Man 2’s Scarlett Johansson are the frontrunners to land the lead role in director Alfonso Cuaron’s Gravity. Robert Downey Jr. is already signed on to appear in the film.
Johansson and Lively are competing against one another for the part, and both have screen-tested for the role of a female astronaut according to Heat Vision. Johansson has worked with Downey Jr. before (on Iron Man 2), while Lively has recently finished shooting Green Lantern with Johansson’s husband Ryan Reynolds.
The film will be shot in 3D (obviously) and gravitates around a team of astronauts repairing a remote space station when they get caught in a storm of space debris. Further details are sketchy, and it is still unknown whether the lead female character is the sole survivor of the disaster (which would impact upon how significant Downey Jr.’s role would be).
The movie was originally earmarked by Universal as a vehicle for Angelina Jolie, but she left the project when it moved to Warner Bros. Cuaron has directed Y tu mamá también, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban and Children of Men. The film is due to be released in 2012.
