First Poster For The Tempest
Julie Taymor’s upcoming adaptation of Shakespeare’s The Temptest will see Helen Mirren take on the usually male role of the magician Prospero and turn it into Prospera.
Mirren is backed up by Russell Brand, Alfred Molina, Alan Cumming, Djimon Hounsou and Chris Cooper with Cemetary Junction’s Felicity Jones her only female co-star.
Here’s the official synopsis: going back to the 16th or 17th century, women practicing the magical arts of alchemy were often convicted of witchcraft. In Taymor’s version, Prospera is usurped by her brother and sent off with her four year-old daughter on a ship. She ends up on an island; it’s a tabula rasa: no society, so the mother figure becomes a father figure to Miranda (Jones). This leads to the power struggle between Caliban (Hounsou) and Prospera; a struggle not about brawn, but about intellect.
Mirren and Brand will also star together in the upcoming remake of the comedy Arthur , released in 2011. The Tempest hasn’t got a set UK release date so we might be waiting until 2011 for this one too.
