Jason Flemyng Joins X-Men: First Class
Jason Flemyng has been cast as Azazel, Nightcrawler’s dad, in X-Men: First Class. Flemyng’s most recent role was as Calibos in Clash of the Titans. X-Men: First Class is being helmed by Matthew Vaughn, who Flemyng has worked with on three previous occasions.
Vaughn has cast Flemyng in all of his films, from Layer Cake and Stardust to Kick-Ass. Flemyng will join a predominantly British cast that includes Alice Eve, James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender and Kevin Bacon.
Speaking at Movie-Con, Flemyng told Empire: “Matthew showed me my costume just the other day. Now I swore I’d never be in heavy make-up again, but this role is going to involve it. But at least they said, “Don’t worry, we’ll add the tail in post”. I am Azazel, and I can teleport by waving my arms.”
Azazel is part of an ancient horde of demonic mutants, the Neyaphem, who were at war with angels. Azazel was the leader of the Neyaphem, who were banished to an alternate dimension after losing the battle. Due to his teleportation powers, Azazel could briefly return to Earth, impregnating women in the hope that his offspring could free him (one such being Nightcrawler, whose mother is Mystique).
Flemyng’s casting as Azazel might suggest that Nightcrawler will appear in the film (though unlike the blue Nightcrawler, Azazel is red). X-Men: First Class is due for release in 2011.
