Mary Jane Axed From Spidey Reboot?
The as yet untitled Spider-Man reboot, which is to be directed by (500) Days of Summer’s Marc Webb and star Andrew Garfield (The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus) as Peter Parker, will not feature Mary Jane Watson. But Emma Roberts leads a host of names vying for the role of Parker’s new love interest.
The character of Mary Jane, as played by Kirsten Dunst in the previous three films, will not be Peter Parker’s love interest according to Heat Vision. Another of Parker’s love interests will be involved instead though, either Gwen Stacy, Felicia Hardy or a new character created specifically for the film.
The shortlist of actresses for the role is thought to include Lily Collins (The Blind Side), Ophelia Lovibond (Nowhere Boy), Imogen Poots (28 Weeks Later), Teresa Palmer (The Sorcerer’s Apprentice) and Emma Roberts (Hotel for Dogs). Scott Pilgrim’s Mary Elizabeth Winstead is believed to have dropped out of the running.
Given that the film is set in Parker’s high school days, the likelihood of Stacy or Hardy being involved is slim (given that Parker did not meet them till much later in his life). There was a recently debunked rumour that Inglourious Basterd’s Christopher Waltz would play the villain.
