piranha300In a statement released today, Dimension Films announced plans to make a sequel to Piranha 3D. Though the film has garnered surprisingly positive reviews, it only managed to haul in $10 million in the US, finishing a disappointing 6th at the box office (behind The Expendables, Vampires Suck, Eat Pray Love, Lottery Ticket and The Other Guys).

But that has not deterred Dimension: “After earning rave reviews from top critics, wild cheers from audiences around the country, and $10 million on its opening weekend, Dimension is pleased to announce that Piranha 3D: The Sequel is in the works.”

Pranha 3D producer Mark Canton also said, “We are thrilled that audiences are not just loving Piranha 3D, but cheering for it. And it’s fantastic that so many critics are really getting the movie and recommending. We can’t wait to get to work on the sequel.”

The film cost just $24 million to make and currently has an 83% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and features a cast almost as star-studded as The Expendables, with Richard Dreyfuss, Ving Rhames, Elisabeth Shue, Christopher Lloyd and Jerry O’Connell. Funny or Die’s Piranha 3D ‘For Your Consideration’ video is well worth a watch.
