Affleck Admits I’m Still Here Is Fake
Debate over whether Casey Affleck’s portrayal of Joaquin Phoenix’s burgeoning rapping career is genuine has been raging on the net recently, and the director finally revealed the truth about I’m Still Here this week.
Talking to The New York Times, Affleck said the piece was more “performance art” than genuine documentary.
“It’s a terrific performance, it’s the performance of his career,” said Affleck, before confirming that “virtually none” of the film was real. “I never intended to trick anybody. The idea of a quote, hoax, unquote, never entered my mind.”
The director explains that there are some subtle hints in the movie itself, including an improvement in the camera work as the film progresses, but admits that there is no ‘big reveal’ which unveils the story as a hoax.
