Cohen To Be Freddie Mercury. Nice!

baron300Yank-baiting comic Sacha Baron Cohen has signed up to play rock legend Freddie Mercury in a film about Queen. The Ali G actor will play the lead role in the movie written by BAFTA-winning scriptwriter Peter Morgan, who has previously worked on The Queen, The Damned United and his most recent work The Special Relationship.

GK Film partners Graham King and Tim Headington will be bankrolling the picture, while the company has also closed a deal for the rights to include the band’s music.

King told Deadline: “Queen is one of the greatest rock bands of all time, and a music brand all unto itself. Freddie Mercury was an awe-inspiring performer, so with Sacha in the starring role, coupled with Peter’s screenplay and the support of Queen, we have the perfect combination to tell the real story behind their success.”

According to reports, the film will focus on the band’s seminal years and culminate witheir iconic performance at Wembley at 1985’s Live Aid concert.
