John Gotti Story To Get Screentime
Tis the season for organised crime drama it seems. After this morning’s news about a possible Goodfellas TV adaptation, and Steve Buscemi’s Boardwalk Empire making waves in the states, there comes further wiseguy rumblings that the rights to the true story of mob boss and “King Of New York” John Gotti Sr, head of the Gambino crime family are being offered by his son John Gotti Jr.
But what’s sparked this sudden interest? A desire to set the record straight apparently. “During the past 20 years, there have been numerous made-for-television movies, books and other representations about me, my father and our family,” Gotti Jr. says in a statement. “None of these projects were done in cooperation with my family and in most cases did not accurately reflect our lives. This film will not be a mob expose, but rather the true story of my life and relationship with my father.”
It’s a tricky situation because any story that might conceivably make those involved in illegal practices money comes under heavy legal scrutiny and any studio interested in the rights would have to wade through copious amounts of red tape. Is is really worth it?
