Aronofsky To Direct Preacher?

preacher210It seems that Darren Aronofsky is getting batted around as a director for comic book adaptations like some kind of cinematic pinball.

There were already rumours that he would be directing the next Superman movie (along with numerous others including Duncan Jones) as well as Wolverine 2 but now it seems that the director will be settling on Garth Ennis’ Preacher.

As good as a Aronofsky-directed Superman might be, we can’t help but feel that Preacher is a better fit for the director – after all, it’s dark to start with – telling the story of the Reverend Jesse Custer who possesses the power of the Word Of God and who teams up with a hard-drinking Irish vampire Cassidy to track down God, who’s gone missing.

It’s not finalised yet though – the news comes from an anonymous source so we have to raise eyebrows at least a little bit.

Preacher’s been languishing in development hell for quite some time, changing directors, producers and formats so often it’s like a three card monte. Garth Ennis started work on a screenplay over 12 years ago, then it was supposed to be a TV series, then Joe Carnahan (the man behind the camera for The A Team) got interested in it and now it seems it’s back in the movies with Aronofsky at the helm.

Can’t say we’re complaining – we’d rather have Aronofsky in command than Carnahan. It’s slated for a 2011 release which means that Aronofsky couldn’t possibly do Superman and Preacher. But which one would you rather have him do?
