gandalf300Frodo’s trek to Mount Doom is starting to look like a walk in the park compared to the journey the Hobbit production team are undertaking to make the long-awaited prequel.

Peter Jackson’s pre-production suffered another set-back as the set was reportedly burned to the ground in New Zealand. It took 50 firefighters three hours to bring the blaze under control in Wellington according to Deadline.

The cause of the fire is yet to be confirmed but many suspect an act of arson given Jackson, Warner Bros, New Line and MGM’s recent conflicts with actors’ unions over reports of low pay.

Shooting on the film is scheduled to start in early 2011, but that date looks likely to be pushed back.
