Rhys Ifans To Play Spider-Man Villain
Little is known about the new Spider-Man movie, but it does seem clear that Marc Webb’s forthcoming reboot will have a very British taste. The Social Network‘s Andrew Garfield is already confirmed as the new Peter Parker and yesterday Rhys Ifans was unveiled as his latest nemesis.
Ifans – who is due to appear in the upcoming Harry Potter finale – joins a cast that also includes Zombieland‘s Emma Stone. Stone will play Gwen Stacy, the love interest for Spider-Man’s alter ego, Peter Parker. The new film takes Spidey back to his high school days, and does not focus on his usual girlfriend, Mary Jane Watson and it has been suggested that producers might seek an equally alternative villain.
Sony have not revealed which character Ifans will play, but of Spidey’s comic book villains only The Lizard and The Vulture were not featured at some point in Sam Raimi’s trilogy.
“We have been very fortunate to attract some of the best actors working today to play the villains in the Spider-Man movies, and it is exciting to see that trend continue with Rhys Ifans,” Sony’s Matt Tolmach told The Guardian. “After seeing his performance in our upcoming film Anonymous, we’re in awe of his talent and think he’s the perfect choice to take on this role.”
The as-yet-untitled fourth Spider-Man film has a provisional release date of July 2012 and Entertainment Weekly has called James Vanderbilt’s screenplay “gritty” and “contemporary”, suggesting that it may be in the same vein as Batman Begins, Christopher Nolan’s successful 2005 reimagining of the Batman series.
