cate300It’s nearly Christmas, Ann Widdecombe has been sent back to wander Dartmoor on her lonesome and The Hobbit is all set to start shooting in the new year: things are slotting into place nicely.

Something else that’s coming together with satisfying pace is the cast of the aforementioned Rings prequel and Cate Blanchett was the latest of the old crowd to sign up for the new project this week.

The Oscar-winning Australian actress played elf-Lady Galadriel in The Lord of the Rings and will be reprising her character in the double-handed Tolkien adaptation, although there is no mention of her ring-bearing character in the actual book.

“Cate is one of my favourite actors to work with, and I couldn’t be more thrilled to have her reprise the role she so beautifully brought to life in the earlier films,” Jackson told Reuters.

Swedish actor Mikael Persbrandt’s casting also leaked out fairly recently, but now Jackson has confirmed that he’s playing the bear shape-shifter Beorn. “The role of Beorn is an iconic one and Mikael was our first choice for the part. Since seeing him read for the role we can’t imagine anyone else playing this character.”
