Deniro300Robert De Niro has been named as President of the Jury of the 64th Cannes Film Festival.

It’s his third time as President, having serving twice in the 80s. There’s no word on the rest of the Jury but it’ll be the usual mix of actors, directors and writers (half of which the general public won’t have heard of).

“The Cannes Film Festival is a rare opportunity for me as it is one of the oldest and one of the best in the world”, said De Niro in a statement.

De Niro’s no slouch when it comes to independent films – he founded the Tribeca Film Festival in 2002 and recently started the Doha Tribeca Film Festival, a joint venutre with the Doha Film Institute which celebrated its second year last year.

Cannes always throws up some interesting winners and with Uncle Boonmee taking home the Palme D’Or last year, 2010 was no exception. Terence Malick’s The Tree Of Life is likely to be in contention this year, so keep an eye out for that (that’s if Malick ever finishes editing it). Cannes runs from May 11th to May 22nd.
