Peabody300Robert Downey Jr. has signed up to voice a super-smart animated dog for his next movie, Peabody and Sherman,.

Now, the cartoon duo might not be familiar to your non-animation spods out there (especially considering they were a minor part of The Rocky And Bullwinkle Show which didn’t get much airtime in the UK) but they’re American icons.

Mr. Peabody is a genius dog who adopts Sherman as his “boy” (a sort of reversal of the boy and his dog trope) and they used the WABAC (pronounced “wayback”) machine to travel to various historical events in order to put them “right (ie. the way they actually happened).

It’s sort of a cross between Brian from Family Guy, Dogbert from Dilbert and Sam Beckett from Quantum Leap.

According to Entertainment Weekly, the original plan was going to be a blend of live action and animation (a la the disastrous Rocky And Bullwinkle movie) before that was wisely shelved and reinvented as a full 3D animation.

Director Rob Minkoff who was last seen shouting from the director’s chair of Jet Li/Jackie Chan punch ’em up, The Forbidden Kingdom admits that perhaps their familiarity these days might be rather limited. “Certainly for Boomers, they’re in the sweet spot of our childhood animation memories, but beyond there it gets a little bit, well, not quite as familiar.”

But he’s keen to elaborate on the new story which will fill in Mr. Peabody’s back story, “Mr. Peabody is this genetic anomaly,” he said “He does have brothers and sisters, all of them non-speaking, no super-smart dogs. He’s an outcast, but has overcome it by being so great at so many things.”

Simpsons veterans Jeffrey Ventimilia and Joshua Sternin are writing the script and we can expect this to hit screens in the distant future of 2014.
