Word ‘On The Grapevine’: Marvin Gaye Biopic Gets The Go Ahead
According to screendaily.com, Jean-Luc Van Damme – producer and managing director of Banana Films which will fund the $8 million dollar project – confirmed the movie, and said of the efforts to gain permission from song right holders EMI: “It has been a long fight”.
The film is currently titled Midnight Love, and will focus on the recording of the same titled album, which was released in 1982 and included the Grammy award winning single Sexual Healing.
Gaye was living in Brussels and struggling with drugs when he began writing the album, which propelled him back to critical acclaim. However, just two years later – and a day before his 45th birthday – his father shot him dead after a family dispute.
The film is set to be directed by British director Julien Temple, famed for his music documentaries including Joe Strummer: The Future Is Unwritten and Sex Pistols documentary The Filth and the Fury.
