Hugo Weaving Signs Up For Cloud Atlas
It’s no huge surprise, with Weaving having worked with the Wachowskis on The Matrix and V For Vendetta and Whishaw having worked with Tykwer on Perfume: The Story Of A Murderer.
They’ll join Tom Hanks and Halle Berry (who’s now moved from “rumoured” to “confirmed” in the casting stakes) and all the actors are likely to play multiple roles.
No one knows how much of Mitchell’s novel’s going to be adapted just yet but however they tackle it, it’s going to be a challenge as the narrative encompasses six different stories in six different time periods – the adventures of Adam Ewing, a 19th century notary in New Zealand; a disenfranchised but crafty British musician in 1930s Belgium; a struggling reporter and a vanity press publisher in the present America; a rebellious clone in a post-apocalyptic future; and a simple tribesman living in the remains of a post-apocalyptic jungle.
It’s a huge undertaking, especially considering the writing style changes with each period too. It’s a great book, but whether it’ll make a great film remains to be seen. Shooting begins in the autumn.
