Penn Badgley To Play Jeff Buckley
We’ll forgive you if his face doesn’t immediately spring to mind if you’re a movie fan because he’s usually to be found on the small screen as Dan Humphrey in Gossip Girl (though he did crop up recently as the love interest in Easy A).
It’ll tell the true story leading up to Buckley’s performance at his late father’s tribute concert in 1991 and his romance with a young woman working at the concert who helps him understand the father he never really knew. It culminates in a performance of his father’s most famous songs which launched the younger Buckley into the spotlight, although that was never his intention.
Deadline got the following quote from Badgley: “”To play a man who was singularly gifted as an artist, greatly misunderstood & mythologized as a human being… It’s something very special and sacred. I’m going to give all I can to this project.”
He’s certainly got big shoes to fill as Buckley was one of the most celebrated artists of his day, passing into legend when he drowned in the Mississippi in 1997.
If you’re not familiar with his incredible vocal ability, I suggest you check out his version of Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah (infinitely superior to Alexandra Burke’s version – a rendition that has no soul and described by Charlie Brooker as “a song forever ruined by being destined to be played at thick people’s funerals” – Amen to that).
