jk210JK Rowling has – sort of – launched her latest addition to the Harry Potter saga: Pottermore. Pottermore is “an online reading experience unlike any other,” according to the famed author, “the digital generation will be able to enjoy a safe, unique, online reading experience built around the Potter books; Pottermore will be the place where fans of any age can share, participate in, and rediscover the series.”

Although the website went live today it won’t be available to all until October. Today’s announcement is more of a way to drum up publicity ahead of the final film’s cinema release on July 15. “A lucky few” (1 million) will be able to access the full features of the site from July 31 (Potter’s birthday) by registering their email address and hoping for the best.

Pottermore will contain a wealth of previously unreleased information about the Potter world, adding up to over 18,000 words. But Rowling envisions the site a collaborative project and is encouraging enthusiasts to submit their own content: “I hope fans and those new to Harry will have as much fun helping to shape Pottermore as I have. Just as I have contributed to the website, everyone else will be able to join in by submitting their own comments, drawings and other content in a safe and friendly environment. Pottermore has been designed as a place to share the stories with your friends as you journey through the site.”

At first the site will only contain information relating to the first book, but all eight books will be added eventually. Pottermore will become an online interactive community, providing a rich multimedia experience for fans (and newcomers) of the series to lose themselves within.

Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows: Part 2 is released on July 15
