Daniel Radcliffe Claims Potter Pressure Made Him ‘Dependent’ On Alcohol
Daniel Radcliffe is hardly the first name we think of when the subject of hard-drinking celebrities comes up (let’s face it, we’re spoilt for choice on that front..) but the Harry Potter star has explained that the pressures of fame lead to such alcohol dependence that he is now teetotal. Radcliffe – who has played the boy wizard for the last decade – claimed that he went off the rails in 2008 while filming Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.
“I became so reliant on alcohol to enjoy stuff,” Radcliffe told GQ magazine, adding that he had also become “complacent” about his job. “There were a few years there when I was just so enamoured with the idea of living some sort of famous person’s lifestyle that really isn’t suited to me.”
Now while we think that someone should point out to Mr Radcliffe that a couple of heavy nights on the town doesn’t constitute “going off the rails” in this culture of excess, we applaud his stance. Apparently the Boy-Who-Swigged developed a taste for whisky and says he was fortunate that the paparazzi failed to capture his drink-fuelled excess.
“I really got away with that because there were many instances when a shot like that could have been taken,” he said, explaining that he hasn’t touched a drop since August last year.
“I’m actually enjoying the fact I can have a relationship with my girlfriend where I’m really pleasant and I’m not —-ing up totally all the time. As much as I would love to be a person that goes to parties and has a couple of drinks and has a nice time, that doesn’t work for me. I do that very unsuccessfully. I’d just rather sit at home and read, or talk to somebody that makes me laugh. There’s no shame in enjoying the quiet life. And that’s been the realisation of the past few years for me.”
