Adam Sandler To Play Dracula

Adam-Sandler210I wonder if Adam Sandler can transform Dracula into an puerile manboy who has anger problems? Well, he’s going to try as he’ll be playing him in Universal’s forthcoming animation Hotel Transylvania.

Well, it certainly won’t be in the same mould as Bela Lugosi or Gary Oldman as Sandler’s Dracula will be an overprotective dad desperate to make sure that his daughter Mavis is safe. To that end, he warns her of the dangers of the outside world and creates a luxury resort where other monsters can relax without the interference of humans. Naturally this all comes crashing down when the resort gets its first human visitor and he falls for Mavis.

The voice cast seems to be comprised of Sandler’s regular crew and includes David Spade (Quasimodo), Kevin James (Frankenstein’s Monster), Steve Buscemi and Molly Shandon (Werewolves). We’re just waiting for Rob Schneider to be announced too. The Lonely Island’s Andy Samberg will play the visiting human.

Doesn’t sound great does it? But well…hold your horses. Sony’s last animated outing was Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs which was unexpectedly excellent and the director is Genndy Tartakovsky who worked on Samurai Jack, Dexter’s Lab and The Clone Wars.

Sony’s President of Production Michelle Raimo-Kouyate said in a statement, “We’re thrilled to be working with Adam to create a comedic Dracula for a new generation. We have a unique story about that iconic character, starring a phenomenal cast directed by Genndy Tartakovsky, that re-imagines Transylvania and its legendary monsters in the way that only animation can.”

Uh huh. Believe it when we see it.
