Unknown Director Jaume Collet-Serra For Akira
Every man and his dog has been rumoured or attached to the remake of the 1988 classic anime Akira and the latest is Jaume Collet-Serra, the director of Unknown. You might as well insert any other random name into this news piece as it’ll probably change next week.
So far we’ve had Albert Torres (Henry Poole is Here), Gary Whitta (The Walking Dead, The Book of Eli) Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby (Ironman) as scriptwriters. Harry Potter butcher Steve Kloves is the latest to turn in a draft.
As for stars, there’s been everyone from Leonardo Di Caprio, Keanu Reeves and Robert Pattinson for the lead role of Tetsuo and Garret Hedlund, Michael Fassbender, Chris Pine, Justin Timberlake and Joaquin Phoenix for his best friend Kaneda.
Apparently Warners are fretting because the budget is inflating faster than Tetsuo’s massive mutant body, bloating to an estimated $200 million. But these are tough times and they won’t have Harry Potter as a fresh cash cow now, so they’re looking to trim the costs down to a more manageable $90 million. Serra’s used to working with tight-ish budgets having also been behind the lens for Spanish horror Orphan.
We’ll see if he manages to go the distance…
