Captain Planet Movie?!

captain210Holy crap, how did I miss this yesterday? Hollywood continues on its relentless march to trample my childhood into the dirt by trying to get a live-action version of Captain Planet off the ground.

Cartoon Network has asked Transformers producer Don Murphy and his partner Susan Monford to bring the 90s eco-hero to life.

Eath! Wind! Water! Fire! Marketing! Surely this is just a crass excuse to sell toys? That’s not to say that nothing ever good comes off crass commericalisation – He-Man was initially developed by Mattel because they couldn’t get the rights to seel Conan The Barbarian toys – but it’s unlikely to bode well for an established property.

“The messages of Captain Planet are even more relevant today,” said Stuart Snyder, president of Turner Broadcasting System Inc.’s Animation, Young Adults and Kids Media division (longest title ever!) in a statement.

“We feel this team can bring the world’s first eco-hero to life in a powerful motion picture that is not only pertinent but entertaining.”

Not to mention lucrative.

Oh well, if they’re casting, I suggest Sting for the lead role. He’s environmentally conscious, representative of the kind of crass commericalised hypocrisy that TBS seem to be promoting and also lent his voice to the original cartoon in the 90s (he played Zarm for you cartoon geeks out there).
