Johnny Depp To Be Dr Seuss

Johnny Depp has plans to play iconic children’s author Dr Seuss in a new biopic. Seuss (born Theodor Seuss Geisel) has been behind some of the best-loved children’s classics (not so much in this country but they’re still well known) including Horton Hears A Who!, The Cat In The Hat and How The Grinch Stole Christmas.

Geisel started off by drawing adverts and cartoon strips before moving on to political cartoons during World War 2. His film Design For Death won the 1947 Academy Award for Documentary Feature. He returned to his distinctive style after the war and eventually penned 46 children’s books.

Universtal and Illumination Entertainment are behind the production, the same that brought us Despicable Me but apparently there will be scant CGI this time round. But then again, given the idiosyncratic style that Seuss possesses maybe a few of his creations might make one or two appearances.

Illumnination are also working on a future Seuss project called The Lorax – a film about the dangers that industrialisation poses to the environment – certainly very timeley. Depp will be producing the biopic and Keith Bunin (In Treamtment) has been hired to write.
