Back in 2006, producer Scott Rudin (who brought us the likes of No Country for Old Men, The Social Network and There Will Be Blood) bought the rights to Stacy Schiff’s book Cleopatra: A Life.

Since then the only real progress on the project has been grabbing Angelina Jolie to play the lead. Now, however, Variety reports that Oscar-winning writer Eric Roth (Forrest Gump, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button) has been approached to pen the script.

Rudin’s attempting to score a big name director to go with it and while James Cameron has been in talks, he’s really after David Fincher so here’s hoping that Roth will prove sufficient bait.

The as yet unnamed project is currently slated for a 2013 release, but things won’t get moving until a director is signed.
