The British Independent Film Awards took place on Sunday night, with the film Tyrannosaur proving favourite with this year’s judging panel and coming out on top to win the Best British Film gong.

If you find yourself wondering why you’ve never heard of it, the film took a bit of a battering at the box office, but its success at the BIFA’s show that it really is a worthy watch. The film also won two other awards; Best Actress going to Olivia Colman, and the Douglas Hickox Award for Best Debut Director going to first-timer Paddy Considine.

Other winners on the night include Michael Fassbender who won Best Actor, and Lynne Ramsay as Best Director for the gripping We Need to Talk About Kevin.

The BIFA’s are a small and rather unsung occurrence much like some of the films they honour, but they are still an interesting and prestigious part of the awards calendar nonetheless. The jury changes every year, and the likes of Gemma Arterton and David Thewlis were said to be among those judging this time around.
